God’s seal is truth
I’ve been having some interesting email exchanges around this whole subject of ‘flat earth’.
The first things to stress, absolutely, is that each of us has to think for ourselves, and to come to our own conclusions.
My job in all this is just to keep pulling information together, and pointing out some avenues to explore, and some ideas to engage with. But each person has to do their own birur, and reach their own conclusions, with an emphasis on asking God to show us, mamash, what’s true and what’s false.
But in this post, let’s ask another pertinent question:
Why does all this matter?

I want to share some of the email exchange I had with a long-time reader and maths professor, האיש.

MATHEMATICS ARE A FUNNY SUBJECT BY NATURE AS WE ALL KNOW, SO YES SOME OF HIS NUMERICAL CALCULATIONS ARE CORRECT AS CAN BE VERIFIED BY A CALCULATOR.
YET, WE ARE MORE ON THE LINES OF DEALING WITH PHYSICS PROBLEMS HERE SUCH AS YOU LUNAR ECLIPSE PROBLEMS. IN DOING SO THIS, THEN OPENS UP A WHOLE NEW CAN OF WORMS !!
YES THE MATHEMATICS ARE PURE AND TRUE, YET, IT IS THE APPLICATIONS AND CONNECTIONS THAT ARE AT THE CRUX OF THE DISCUSSION. WE ALL KNOW THAT THERE ARE TWO SIDES TO A COIN AND DISCUSSIONS AND ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO VERY HEATED IDEAS, THUS BOTH SIDE CAN AND DO PRESENT THEIR MATHEMATICAL CASES WITH SOME DEGREE OF PRECISION AS THE FLAT EARTH SIDE DOES AND SO DO THE SPHERICAL SIDES.

MY ONLY CONCERN IS THAT IF I WERE TO ASK A HIGHLY MATHEMATICAL AND OBSERVATIONAL QUESTION TO THE FLAT EARTH SIDE, THEY MOST LIKELY WILL NOT GIVE A RATIONAL MATHEMATICAL, PHYSICAL,OBSERVATIONAL SOLUTION ?
ONE BEING WHY WAS THE TRANS-ATLANTIC CABLE LAYED CONNECTING EUROPE TO AMERICA AND NOT TWO TALL TOWERS FOR DIRECT COMMUNICATIONS ?
I HAVE BEEN ON TOP OF THE WORLDS TALLEST BUILDINGS AND SOME OF THE TALLEST MOUNTAINS IN NORTH AMERICA AND HAVE ASKED THE SIMILAR QUESTION ? WHY I COULD NOT SEE ACROSS THE GLOBE EVEN WITH SOME OF THE MOST POWERFUL TELESCOPES TO DATE ?
SO, I MYSELF, CAN PROVE VERY STRONG MATHEMATICAL, PHYSICAL, OBSERVATIONAL PROOF FOR A SPHERICAL EARTH.
MY NEXT STEP IS TO CORRELATE IT WITH THE TORAH.
I KNOW THAT IT STARTS WITH AN OLD MIDRASH OF HOW HASEM WITHDREW HIMSELF FROM A CIRCLE HE CREATED BY THROWING HIS TIZITIS FROM EACH HAND OUT AND FORMED THE CIRCLE, TO WHICH HE EMPTIED HIMSELF AND THEN THE KAV OR LIVE COULD ENTER AND EXIT, THUS GIVING RISE TO THE LEVELS AND CHARACTERISTICS.
A BALL? A SPHERE?

IN ANY EVENT DOES IT REALLY MATTER ANYWAY WHAT CONCLUSIONS ANYONE BELIEVES ? ONLY HASHEM EXISTS AND HE CREATED EVERYTHING AND RUNS THE SHOW.
OUR ONLY CHANCE IS TO CONNECT TO HIM WHICH THE RAV HAS HELPED ME TREMENDOUSLY !!! ALL OTHER MENTAL GYMNASTICS ARE ACTUALLY IRRELEVANT AND A WASTE OF PRECIOUS TIME IN LEARNING BOTH THE WRITTEN AND ORAL TORAH AND DRAWING CLOSER TO HASHEM.

Here’s what I replied with:
I guess the reason ‘it matters’, is just because truth matters.
If God-denying science is built on one lie after another, and there DO seem to be so very many lies around Bereishit and Torah-denying accounts of space and how the world and universe operates, then the more those lies are exposed – the less barriers there are to people returning to God and the Torah.

I have the Judean hills right in front of me, as I type. They are less than 20 miles away, some days I seem them very clearly. Many days, I don’t see them at all. And that’s in ‘sunny’ Israel where there aren’t a lot of clouds.

I’ve been thinking more about this.
My brother had a circle of friends, all ‘orthodox educated’ in a Jewish school, many coming from backgrounds where they used to keep Shabbat and kosher…
Around 6-7 years ago, he asked me if I could put together a book debunking the theory of evolution, because so many of his circle were using it as ‘the reason’ why the Torah was false, God forbid, and they didn’t really need to keep any of the Torah’s laws anymore, because ‘science’ had proven the Torah to be false.
Go back and read this sentence.
It encapsulates so very much of ‘why this matters’.

I spent months and months researching Darwin, and that ended up in my writing an (unpublished….) book called ‘Dancing on a volcano’, which basically debunked all the climate change lies we are still being told.
Maybe one day, I’ll actually get around to publishing it.

In the meantime, what happened to that group of my brother’s scientifically-enlightened friends?
When Covid happened, and the nanotech shots came out, OF COURSE every last one of them believed every word of the holy scientists, who were using flawed mathematical models to ‘prove’ why we all had to be locked down and masked up.
And OF COURSE, every last one of them ran off as fast as their legs could carry them, to shoot themselves up with Covid shots and every booster they could get their hands off – and also made sure to ‘vaccinate’ their children too.
Of course they did.
Because they were ‘following the science’.
That same lying science that gave us the theory of evolution, ‘man-made climate change’ – and probably, also, the heliocentric model of the world that has a spherical earth by random accident.

Why does this matter?
Because God’s seal is truth.
And anyone who is not willing to at least examine their basic assumptions about the world, and even more importantly, about themselves, ends up pretty stuck in the world of lies.

It’s a basic fact that no-one can get anywhere near the poles, to see what’s really going on there.
This by itself should have us scratching our heads and wondering why this is.
But let’s imagine the ‘conspiracy theorists’ are right, and that we’re living on a flat plain ringed by a massive ice wall, that goes on for miles.
And then beyond that ice wall, there is more land that none of us know about, that maybe continues on for another 1,000 – 2,5000 miles.
And then beyond that: the edge of the rakia, the firmament put in place by God.
Let’s imagine that a person could actually get on a plane, and see ‘the edge of the world’, with the firmament enclosing our flat earth, that perhaps resembles some sort of clear glass ‘dome’.
Imagine you could see that with your own eyes.
And touch it, maybe.
Would a person come away from that experience still doubting whether God deliberately made this world, or whether it – and us – are just a random accident of ‘nature’?

On the other side of this argument – it’s so very easy to prove the world is spherical.
Let people boat and fly over and around the poles freely.
End of debate.
It really is that simple.
And now, we can perhaps start to understand even more, why this really does matter.
And why the authorities are going to such great lengths, to keep shutting this debate about ‘flat earth’ down, without actually giving a shred of proof, beyond mathematical formulas and CGI animation, why their version of events is true.

May I direct your attention to Youtube channel “JTolan Media1” (https://www.youtube.com/@jtolanmedia1773)?
He has a hard math and engineering background. He has done many videos using infrared photography with interesting analyses that you should be able to follow. From the ground and from the air. From the air he has demonstrated identifiable landmark distances many hundreds of miles away, far beyond what the globe model allows, even when taking into account the 30+ thousand feet elevation.
What Rivka says about the air is true. On a clear day, you can see very far. But most days, even in someplace like Israel, are not like that. The time of day also matters. In the morning, I usually can’t see the Judean mountains at all just 10 or so miles away. By sunset, depending on the time of year, many days the air is so clear they look like I can reach out and touch them.
I have seen images from the ground over impressive distances. However, beyond some amount, probably being 1-200 miles, no telescope, no matter how big, can peer directly through the soup. Infrared can pretty easily take you this far.
To see further, you need to take advantage of the silhouette effect. If you live in Israel, one example of this I hope to take advantage of is, around 20 days of the year (half in May and half in July) the sun sets right behind Crete, 500 miles away. It should be possible to capture this. I have seen examples of such from over 400 miles away in visible light. Using infrared, this should be even easier. This is patently impossible on a globe, no matter the math.
Cyprus is a possible target for a direct line of site picture. When I first discovered the earth was flat several years ago, I worked on the 23rd floor in a Tel Aviv skyscraper and my desk looked out towards the Mediterranean. I had actually started acquiring the needed equipment to capture Cyprus on film (so to speak). Just as I was about to, we all were sent home.
Another reason you can’t see something like the Himalayas are the intervening obstructions. Even though they are dwarfed by Mount Everest in absolute size, in angular size, it is the other way around. You simply can’t see past them. But if you get high enough, and the air is clear enough, you can see it.
bs”d Well, HaShem can see “from one end of the earth to the other”, right? And how do you see the end of a globe?
It also says in Chagiga that before the sin, Adam could see from one end of the world to the other. Our mesorah on Maaseh Breishis makes MUCH more sense on a flat plane. Even the poshet pshat of many, many psukim in the Tanach.

Especially after about 1:20:00 it gets to how ~all celebrities and important people are secret trannies…
Re: the question on how to know ‘who is true’, the only real answer to that question is to keep talking to God about everything, and to keep asking Him to show you who and what is true.
EG, it seems even the ‘advice’ that Rebbe Nachman gave about smallpox was faked to have him telling his followers to ‘vaccinate’ – when that’s not at all what he said.
Or, look at what happened with R Kanievsky, where all this ‘daat Torah’ was deliberately faked in his name to coerce the chareidi public into taking the ‘safe and effective’ shots.
Even when people are totally 100%, massive tzaddikim, things can still be manipulated and faked ‘in their name’.
Separately, Rav Natan of Breslov writes that another way to know if something is really ‘true’ is if it brings you closer to God, or not.
A belief in Yoshki, for example, totally fails that test, as people then ‘believe in Yoshki’, instead of in God.
The same is true of all false religions, and all false prophets.
I have a possible reason why it’s important to search for the truth….. Our thoughts are extremely powerful. They can literally create our realities. Therefore, it makes a difference in what truths we believe…..
A small thought I had this morning while doing the ברכות השחר. One of the blessings in Hebrew isרוֹקַע הָאָֽרֶץ עַל הַמָּֽיִם which translated to English means “who spreads the earth upon the water”. Hashem is all-powerful of course and can make earth spread upon whatever shape He wants but still this morning in my head as I recited the blessing a flat plane of water with earth spreading on top is what came to my mind.
Also I find it’s interesting that רוֹקַע shares the same shoresh (root) as רקיע (firmament). According to Hebrew Wikipedia (https://he.wiktionary.org/wiki/%D7%A8%D7%A7%D7%99%D7%A2) Chazal say that the word רקיע is derived from the shoresh resh, kuf, ayin which means flattening.
